Survey/Construction Comments on the GAO Report
While most GPS users ponder the effects of a potential  drop below 24 satellites — seemingly a long way from 31— real-time, high-precision users should worry about a drop of only two or three satellites, unless they can use GLONASS.
DeLorme Extends GPS Capabilities to ESRI Users
With the Earthmate PN-40 Extension for ESRI software from DeLorme, mobile professionals can convert collected waypoints and tracks with associated comments for import into ArcGIS Desktop as shapefiles. Users can also transfer views of their projects for use in the field, display MrSID and GeoTIFF imagery files, and navigate rural terrain across DeLorme trail and road data, the company said.
Hemisphere GPS Guidance Ships on Stara Self-Propelled Sprayer
Hemisphere GPS and Stara S.A. Industria de Implementos Agricolas, an agricultural implement manufacturer based in Brazil, have launched Stara's newest self-propelled sprayer. The Gladiador comes standard equipped with Hemisphere GPS precision agriculture guidance, automated steering, and boom control technology.
S&C NEWSLETTER: EDITOR'S COLUMN
GPS Receivers for GIS Data Collection
In my column earlier this month, I discussed the use of consumer GPS receivers for GIS data collection. Remember the analogy I used?a Volkswagen Beetle wasn?t designed to run in a Formula One race? This column is going to focus on the Formula One cars, not the Volkswagen Beetles. In other words, it will focus on the GPS receivers on the market that are designed for GIS data collection. I will refer to them as GPS/GIS receivers.

SSTL-Led Team Investigates GNSS Signals for Remote Sensing
Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL) will lead a British project to exploit signals from GPS and GNSS navigation satellites that are reflected from the Earth for remote sensing purposes. The project will investigate a prototype instrument capable of measuring the roughness of the sea and soil moisture content, providing data for atmospheric science and for operational ocean and weather forecasting.

Mapping the Underworld: Testing GPS and GSM in Urban Canyons
Beneath the streets lie thousands of kilometers of cables and pipes. Buried decades ago, their exact location remains a mystery. At the University of Nottingham, researchers tested GPS and a system that pairs GPS with Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) algorithms. Their goal: find a solution for mapping buried assets, which in turn will increase the efficiency of streetworks projects.
DEFORMATION ARTICLES
Steep-Slope Monitoring
Although GPS is an efficient tool for deformation monitoring, it also is an expensive one for large projects. The authors developed a remote-controlled monitoring system using an electronic switching device for multiple antennas to monitor steep slopes at the Xiaowan hydropower station in China.

Measuring Mach 8
The Benchmark Survey System, developed for the U.S. Air Force's Holloman High Speed Test Track. replaces legacy NGA conventional survey techniques with a GPS-only system, maintaining sub-millimeter positioning accuracy while increasing throughput by 400 percent, with an 85 percent decrease in manpower. Results agree with recent NGA precise survey data to better than 0.6 mm horizontal and better than 1.0 mm vertical.

Trimble GPS Mapping Solutions Receive EU Certification
GPS World
Trimble (Sunnyvale, California) has announced that its GeoXT handheld computer, GPS Pathfinder ProXT receiver, and GPS Pathfinder ProXRT receiver have obtained TÜV certification under the European Union (EU) Agricultural Directive Commission Regulation 796/04, Article 30. The Directive supports the validation of area measurement methods for agricultural parcels in order to comply with the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU.
